Caribou from Teshekpuk Lake region, directly above and within NPR-A; 230 to 250 miles to Barter Island. Dozens of this group remained on Barter Island, to later starve to death. The large majority traveled to the nearby mountains and joined in with the resident Central Arctic group. The resultant increase in the Central Arctic Herd can be attributed to oil development, but not in any way that can be construed as positive. (red oval indicates origination of caribou, red line denotes linear distance, not travel route, to west boundary of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Off map, not shown, 50 miles across the refuge to Barter Island).
